We took off Friday night after work and drove down to the Chapel Hill, NC area. We made a stop in Woodbridge (about 30 minutes south) for some Chick Fil A. Not only did we get dinner, we got a great idea of how we would be celebrating Valentines day the following week.
We got into the hotel a bit after midnight, got our key, and went to open our door. Key didn't work. We knocked on the door more as a joke than as the expectation that someone was actually in the room. We heard no response to our knock and went back to the office to get a new key. We tried our room door again with the new key. Again it didn't work and as we tried to swipe it a few more times heard "you have the wrong room!" Apparently there was someone in our room. We went back to the office again and the lady called the room to figure out what was going on. The folks in our room had originally been assigned to 314, but the key they got didn't work for 314 so they decided to walk around the building to the other side and try all the other doors and it just so happened to work on the room we had been assigned. Odd, Yes. Confused they had yelled at us for having the wrong room, also Yes. Mostly however we just considered ourselves fortunate not to walk in on an old couple fast asleep in the wrong room.
Race day was chilly and wet, but probably better than hot and humid. Eating 12 donuts is easier to manage under cool temperatures rather than hot. So they say anywho...
Surprisingly there was not as much vomit as anticipated, and the two post donut miles weren't as difficult as I expected them to be. The real difficulty was just getting the donuts down. Swallowing 12 donuts as quickly as possible is one of the most unsatisfying things I can remember since trying to eat a chocolate covered sardine in college... True, the first one tasted pretty delicious, and the second one was okay, but by #4 I wanted nothing to do with my box of sugary goodness. By #8 I'd of thrown in the towel if not for the fear of shame, returning home to Kaylyn as a failure. How could I live with myself if after leaving my wife for 1.5 nights and driving 5.5 hours each way, I didn't even complete the challenge. I knew it would haunt me for an entire year until the 8th annual came around in 2012. So with the help and encouragement of good friends and a few cups of water (which although helped to remove the sugar film in the mouth, really just added a whole new element of "gross") I managed to get the last four down. None of us finished anywhere near the winning time of 29 minutes, 31 Seconds (yes, that is running and eating... I'm still not so sure I believe it.)
And after all that, who doesn't want to make a donut box angel???
Tyler (left) only managed 8 donuts and is still regretting it. With the memory of dissatisfaction still fresh in my mind, I told him I have no desire to do such a thing again, but if he needed the moral support, I am sure I could be convinced.
So for Valentines Day, I really wanted to go down to Woodbridge to experience the SPECIAL Door Prizes, Treats, and Fun at Chick Fil A. I'm not the type that really gets all excited about doing something special for V Day, but I did think this would have been a pretty funny surprise. I almost thought about telling Kaylyn to wear something nice for our surprise evening. Unfortunately Kaylyn had to work late and by the time she made it home and we factored in the hour we'd of been sitting in traffic to get down there, it would have already been close to 8 and we'd have probably missed the most Special of the Door Prizes. So Kaylyn made some delicious Carbonara she had planned to make for us to celebrate our love, after which we enjoyed the company of good friends for the weekly viewing of Love in the Making - The Bachelor.

In other news Kaylyn held a Baby Cheetah at work this week.
