Jack Darwin Bessey

The large majority of you folk that frequent Team Bessey are likely already aware that we are now running the three man weave as opposed to the basic pick and roll for family night, however as a means of getting the majority of the details out there for all who desire it and for our record, and to answer the calls (mostly to family) for more pictures here is the delivery and days after deets/photos.

After issuing a handful of three day pay or quit notices we finally decided to evict the little parasitic fetus that had been leeching off Moms life supply for the past nine months. Kaylyn's mother and sister had delivered about 2 weeks early with most all their children so Kaylyn was fairly confident she would follow suit. As two weeks out came and passed we started to get pretty anxious. It was almost as if mentally we had been preparing for an early delivery so instead of realizing Jack's due date hadn't even arrived yet, it felt as if he was late.  At the Dr. visit a week before the due date Kaylyn showed signs of progression, she was dilated to a 3 and based on that along with the discomfort she was beginning to feel, the doctor said she wouldn't be surprised to see her go into labor in the next few days.

Despite all the walking, spicy food, eggplant parmesan, and other old wives tales methods for hastening labor, a week later we were sitting back in the doctors office for the final 'regular' checkup, still dilated to just a three. The doctor scheduled a routine stress test and sonogram for the next day (Friday) and said we'd plan for an induction the following week if he hadn't come on his own. The hospital ended up being completely booked for scheduled inductions through June 1st so the doctor said to just schedule a checkup for next week and they would come up with a "medical reason" to send us over to the hospital at that time. As we drove home and thought about all the different scenarios for when to induce we decided the best option would be to just do it tomorrow, on his due date, but weren't sure if the doctor would allow it. Never hurts to hope and ask though, right? We spent all night thinking up reasons to use to convince the doctor to induce immediately.

We went to the stress test/sonogram appointment the next day, Friday, with hospital bags packed and all the reasons to sell the doctor on why inducing today was a good idea. We were stunned when the doctor quickly responded in the affirmative to our request without any sales pitch at all.

By the time we got over to the hospital, checked in, settled into the room, and hooked up to the pitocin, it was 5PM. We geared up for a long night. They upped her dosage of pit at 5:40 and upped it again along with breaking her water at 6:30. By 7:00 the contractions were coming non stop, with no break at all, so they killed the pitocin to see how things would progress on their own. By 8:00 the contractions were noticeably more painful and the doctor measured her at a 4/5 dilation. That was enough to convince Kaylyn it was time for a little nectar of the gods. It took them about 45 minutes to get the Epidural in and as an observer, it was definitely noticeable that the pain got progressively severe over that time. Kaylyn handled it great of course, but as soon as she got that Epi she became quite chipper. About 20 minutes later the nurse checked the progression and we were all baffled to hear Kaylyn was completely dilated. Word is about a cm an hour is good progression and Kaylyn managed to go from a 4/5 to complete in just 1 hour and she was probably completely dilated or close to it by the time they got the Epidural in. The Epidural made the whole experience much more relaxing and enjoyable so it was nice she got it, but she is happy to know that she could probably get by without one if she chose to in the future.

We waited about 45 minutes longer to allow the Epi to wear off enough that Kaylyn could feel when to push. And after about an hour and a half of pushing at 11:43 pm our handsome little buddy made his earthly debut weighing 7 lbs 13 oz and measuring 21 inches long. Dude had a massive cone head from all that pelvic headbutting so by the time we went to our pediatrician checkup 4 days later he was only 20 inches...

Kaylyn handled everything great and although it was painful prior to the Epi and tiring pushing, we both agree it was quite an enjoyable experience. The nurses and doctor were awesome and we were chatting, joking and laughing all night, oh yeah, and having a baby. A much different type of evening than either of us really expected.

All in all from the beginning of the pregnancy to the delivery to the recovery up to this point we feel very blessed, everything has gone extremely smooth and Kaylyn has felt as well as she can hope through each phase of the process. Jack has been a great baby thus far. He has been a great eater and sleeper thus far doesn't cry too much and may or may not have burned through 4 diapers in an hour this morning with his powerful driving poops, the little stinker. We feel lucky and blessed to have him and love him very much.

First things first, if you are fortunate enough to deliver at Arlington Virginia Medical Center, you will find the best part to be the delightful to go meal they give you as a discharge gift. Complete with Pasta, breadsticks, parmesan cheese, and Cookies for dessert!

Grandpa and Grandma came to visit.

This hand sanitizer is awesome so we may or may not have left the hospital with a bottle... I just couldn't get over how soft and moist it left your hands after it killed 99.999% of the germs.  Way better than Purell.

 

Of course we took him home from this hospital in his Utah onesie... teach them in their youth and they will never stray. 

  

Jack is a very reverent baby and already has his missionary haircut. 

  

 Sure it may be black, but like his Dad his hair does anything you tell it to.

 

  

 We all know the real reason to have a kid... get some extra coin from Uncle Sam!

My brother Jake just happened to be rolling through town on business which was pretty awesome.

Kaylyn's sister Megan came to help out the first week home from this hospital and teach Kaylyn about all things Motherish... Megs your help can not be appreciated enough, thank you so much. 

We took Jack on his first adventure to see the the Arlington Cemetery Flags placed at all the graves for memorial day as well as the MLK memorial which was dedicated last fall.  

 

 

 This new addition to our family has made us so much more in love.

 This is a great new memorial out here and one well deserved for such an iconic figure.  

I know this may sound bad, but I can't hold back from saying it... we found it very interesting how disproportionate the ethnic diversity was at the MLK memorial as opposed to others. Caucasians need to show a little more RESPECT!
